Have your say! Reducing pokies harm
21 March 2022
The Department of Internal Affairs have recently sent out communications inviting Class 4 venues and stakeholders to participate in a consultation on Reducing pokies harm. They are interested in hearing about your experiences and views on how we can best protect people from gambling harm in pubs and clubs.
The Department have identified three key areas:
- Providing more specific tools for staff to help better identify harmful gambling, including record keeping and training.
- Potentially changing some of the features and information displayed on the pokie machines themselves.
- Strengthening penalties.
The consultation is not looking at wider changes to how the pokies system works, it is focused on protecting New Zealanders from experiencing gambling harm in pubs and clubs.
Clubs New Zealand will be preparing a submission on behalf of clubs and we will keep you in the loop as this starts to take shape. As always we recommend that clubs also throw their voice into the mix on an individual level as well, if you would like to make a submission on behalf of your club, please head to www.dia.govt.nz/reducingpokiesharm to read about the proposed changes and to have your say.
