Problem Gambling Awareness Training - Online

Problem Gambling Awareness Training is an interactive 2 hour course designed to ensure venue managers and staff supervising gambling in the course of their duties able to identify signs of gambling harm and know how to respond confidently and appropriately.

This online offering of the Problem Gambling Awareness Training is aimed at club management, committee and staff who were unable to attend the face to face training in your area or who need to complete training before they first begin supervising gambling in the course of their duties. 

While this online course is compliant with the regulations and features interactive sessions we recommend that you attend the next available face to face training in your area to ensure that you are meeting the Department of Internal Affairs best practice guidance.

Course description

Clubs New Zealand's Problem Gambling Awareness Training has been designed to ensure that clubs and your staff are compliant with the Gambling (Harm Prevention and Minimisation) Amendment Regulations 2023.

Staff who complete the training will learn how to:

  • approach a player that the manager or staff have reasonable grounds to believe may be experiencing difficulties relating to gambling; and
  • provide information to a player about the characteristics of problem gambling (including recognised signs of problem gambling); and
  • provide information to a player about the potential dangers of problem gambling; and
  • provide information to a player about how to access problem gambling services; and
  • remind a player that the manager or a person acting on the manager’s behalf may identify a person who they have reasonable grounds to believe is a problem gambler and exclude the player from the gambling area of the venue for up to 2 years; and
  • remind a player that they can identify themselves as a problem gambler and request that the venue manager or a person acting on the manager’s behalf exclude them from the gambling area of the venue for up to 2 years; and
  • monitor for signs of harm, including through conducting gambling area sweeps.

Who should attend?

At a minimum this course should be completed by the venue manager, staff who supervise gaming in the course of their duties and club committee.
