Our Historyv2

The first Conference of Delegates from the Working Men's Clubs took place in Wellington on June 25th & 26th 1896.  The Evening Post reported that the conference was to discuss affiliation and management of all Clubs of the kind and to watch pending legislation affecting Clubs.

Several years later in 1912 Clubs New Zealand was formed under the name Associated Clubs of New Zealand.  It is the oldest association representing Clubs in the country.

The association has previously been called;

  • Associated Clubs of New Zealand
  • New Zealand Chartered Clubs Inc

We have certainly come along way since those first meetings over a century ago.

If you are interested in the colourful history of the Chartered Club movement, In the Club, a book by former president Jack Rolfe published in 1999, gives a comprehensive account. Copies are available by contacting National Office.
